Kathmandu: Minister for Drinking Water, Mahindra Raya Yadav, announced that water from the Melamchi drinking water project would be distributed in the Kathmandu Valley starting January 15. The minister made this statement during an inspection visit to the Sundarijal-based Water Treatment Plant.

Minister Yadav emphasized that water distribution would commence at 9:00 am on January 15, as the water from Melamchi had already reached Sundarijal. He assured that the water supply from Sundarijal would be maintained throughout all seasons in Kathmandu. Minister Yadav also directed relevant agencies and officials to address broken pipelines and malfunctioning drinking water meters in different parts of the city.

The resumption of water supply follows the repair and maintenance of the Melamchi project, which was damaged due to floods and landslides in the project site in Sindhupalchowk district. Secretary at the Ministry of Drinking Water, Suresh Acharya, indicated that initially, water supply would be ensured in areas such as Anamnagar, Minbhawan, Mahakalchaur, Rigani, Bhaktapur, Khumaltar, Balaju, and Bansbari on January 15. Gradual distribution will then extend to other parts of the city.

Preparations are underway to distribute Melamchi water to various areas in the city, with a daily supply of around 170 million liters to Kathmandu.
