West Palm Beach: A man accused of attempting to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump has been charged with federal gun crimes. Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, appeared in court Monday, facing charges of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Routh was arrested on Sunday after an alleged attempt to shoot Trump at his West Palm Beach golf course. A U.S. Secret Service agent reportedly noticed the barrel of a rifle pointing from shrubbery at Trump International Golf Course, prompting agents to intervene. Trump was unharmed in the incident.

Authorities said Routh fled the scene but was quickly apprehended. Police recovered an "AK-47-style" rifle with a scope, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera from the location.

Routh, a self-employed builder from Hawaii with a decades-long arrest record, regularly posted political content on social media, often critical of Trump. Further charges are expected to be filed in a future arraignment.
