New York: Time Magazine has named US President-elect Donald Trump its "Person of the Year" for 2024, marking the second time he has received the honor. Trump previously held the title in 2016 following his surprise victory over Hillary Clinton.
The accolade recognizes Trump’s historic political comeback, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election and securing Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress. The magazine cited his ability to drive a "once-in-a-generation political realignment" and reshape the American presidency, highlighting his role as both a product and a driver of populism in the United States.
The magazine's cover features Trump in his signature red tie, striking a contemplative pose. Time acknowledged both his influence and controversies in 2024, including convictions for business fraud and surviving two assassination attempts. The magazine noted his growing impact on global politics, with promises of sweeping policy changes, such as mass expulsions of undocumented immigrants, major tariffs, and a shift in US foreign policy, including casting doubt on support for Ukraine.
Trump’s resurgence follows a tumultuous political career, including his supporters storming the US Capitol in 2021 and multiple legal challenges. Despite these setbacks, he returned to the top of the Republican ticket and won against Harris in the general election.
Other finalists for the Person of the Year included Vice President Kamala Harris, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya.
