AI Action Summit Calls for Human-Centric Approach; Sets Priorities for Ethical and Sustainable AI

Paris: The AI Action Summit in Paris underscored the need for a diverse AI ecosystem, emphasizing a human-centric, rights-based, and ethical approach to artificial intelligence. With a focus on safety and security, the summit called for urgent action to address inequalities and support capacity-building in developing countries.

A total of 58 countries, along with the European Union and African Union, signed the joint statement released after the summit. However, the United States and the United Kingdom notably declined to sign the statement.

Key Highlights of the Joint Statement
The statement, titled "Inclusive and Sustainable Artificial Intelligence for People and the Planet," emphasized the importance of reinforcing diversity in the AI ecosystem. It called for an open, multi-stakeholder, and inclusive approach to AI development. The summit stressed the need to ensure AI remains human rights-based, ethical, safe, secure, and trustworthy while addressing inequalities and supporting developing nations in building AI capabilities.

The summit also acknowledged existing global AI initiatives, including the UN General Assembly Resolutions on AI, the Global Digital Compact, UNESCO's AI Ethics Recommendations, the G7's Hiroshima AI Process, and the African Union’s AI Strategy.

Summit Priorities
The AI Action Summit set several priorities to guide the future of AI development. These include:

-Promoting AI accessibility to bridge the digital divide.
-Ensuring AI is open, inclusive, transparent, ethical, and secure.
-Encouraging innovation in AI while preventing market concentration.
-Supporting AI deployment that positively shapes labor markets and drives sustainable growth.
-Making AI sustainable for people and the planet.
-Strengthening international cooperation for AI governance and regulation.
-Modi and Macron Co-Chair AI Action Summit
-Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi co-chaired the summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday in Paris. The two leaders emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in AI regulation and innovation.

Following the summit, PM Modi will visit the United States from February 12-13, where he is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump and other senior officials to discuss bilateral cooperation, trade, and AI governance.
