Kathmandu: In a moment etched forever in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) finally lifted their maiden title after 18 long seasons. In a thrilling final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, RCB edged out Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 6 runs, ending their legacy of heartbreaks and unfulfilled potential.

A Nail-Biting Finish
Chasing a target of 191 runs, Punjab Kings could only manage 184/7 in 20 overs. Needing 29 off the final over, Shashank Singh’s late fireworks (3 sixes and a four) were not enough to get Punjab over the line. This defeat extended Punjab’s own elusive title hunt, while Bengaluru finally broke their curse.

Earlier, RCB, after losing the toss, posted 190/9 with Virat Kohli top-scoring with 43 runs. Contributions from captain Rajat Patidar (26), Liam Livingstone (25), and Jitesh Sharma and Mayank Agarwal (24 each) ensured a competitive total.

A Team Performance Built on Consistency
Under new captain Rajat Patidar, RCB transformed into a balanced and cohesive unit. The team won 11 matches, including all away fixtures, and showcased incredible depth, with 9 different players winning 'Player of the Match' awards across the season.

Batting was led by Virat Kohli, who amassed 657 runs, followed by Phil Salt (403 runs at a strike rate of 175+), Patidar (312), and Devdutt Padikkal (247 from 10 matches). In a must-win league game, Jitesh Sharma’s stunning 85 off 33 balls sealed their spot in the top-2, highlighting the team’s depth in the lower-middle order.

Disciplined Bowling Attack
RCB’s bowling relied on stability rather than constant changes. Josh Hazlewood (22 wickets in 12 games), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Yash Dayal spearheaded the pace attack. Their combined efforts ensured RCB remained lethal in both powerplays and death overs.

Spin duties were handled by Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma, who shared 25 wickets and maintained economies below 8.50. Krunal shone in the final, taking 2 wickets for just 17 runs, putting the brakes on Punjab’s chase.

RCB’s pace trio contributed 64 wickets this season, the third-highest after Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Overcoming Final-Hoodoo
Before 2025, RCB had reached the final three times (2009, 2011, and 2016)—losing all while chasing. In a twist of fate, they batted first for the first time in a final this season. Despite posting what was considered 15-20 runs short, their disciplined bowling helped them defend the total.

Punjab, having successfully chased 204 runs at the same venue in Qualifier-1, were favorites. But RCB’s bowlers held their nerves and delivered when it mattered most.

Virat Kohli’s Emotional Redemption
The most poignant moment of the night came when Virat Kohli, the heart and soul of RCB since 2008, broke down in tears after the win. The 36-year-old, who has given 18 years of unwavering loyalty and performance to the franchise, finally saw his dream fulfilled.

"It's been 18 years. I have given this team my youth, my prime and my experience. I have tried to win every season and I have given my all — and finally this moment has come. It is an unbelievable feeling," said an emotional Kohli post-match.

His tears resonated with millions of fans who have supported RCB through highs and heartbreaks. His wife, Anushka Sharma, also teared up in the stands, adding a personal, heartfelt note to the emotional victory.

A New Era for RCB
With this historic win, RCB has not only ended a title drought but has also rewritten their narrative — from perennial underachievers to IPL champions. Their success this season, built not on individual brilliance alone but on team unity, consistency, and resilience, signals a new chapter for the franchise.

The wait is over. RCB are finally champions.
