Kathmandu: The government has dismissed Madhesh Province Chief Sumitra Subedi Bhandari, following growing controversy over the recent government formation in the province. The decision was made during a meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Monday, officials confirmed.

The cabinet also decided to remove Saroj Kumar Yadav, the CPN (UML) parliamentary party leader in Madhesh Province, from the post of Chief Minister. His appointment and the oath-taking ceremony held at a hotel before dawn had drawn widespread criticism and accusations of constitutional violation.

In Bhandari’s place, the government has recommended Surendra Labh as the new Province Chief. The recommendation has been forwarded to the President for approval, according to sources at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The move marks a major political shift in Madhesh Province, coming just days after opposition parties and civil society groups launched protests accusing the previous appointment process of undermining federalism and democratic norms.
