Kathmandu: The Hong Kong government has removed the long-standing requirement for Nepali passport holders to obtain a transit visa while passing through Hong Kong International Airport, provided they remain within the airport’s transit area.

According to the Consulate General of Nepal in Hong Kong, the new provision came into effect today, Saturday, 15 November 2025, following continuous diplomatic efforts and formal requests from the Nepali side.

Nepali travellers had been required to secure a transit visa for Hong Kong since June 2005, creating a major procedural hurdle for those flying between Nepal and third countries via Hong Kong.

The Consulate General said in its press release that the removal of this requirement would significantly ease travel for Nepali passengers and was expected to encourage greater use of Hong Kong as a transit route.

The statement also noted:“This step by the Hong Kong government is commendable and praiseworthy as it will help strengthen bilateral relations between Nepal and the Hong Kong government. The Consulate General of Nepal expresses its sincere gratitude to the Hong Kong government on behalf of the Government of Nepal.”
