Kathmandu: Ruby Kumari Thakur has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, becoming the youngest person to hold the position.

Thakur, a Member of Parliament from the Shram Sanskriti Party, secured a strong majority in the voting held on Friday. She received 229 votes in her favor, while five voted against and 22 abstained.

Her candidacy was supported by major parties including the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Nepali Congress, Nepal Communist Party, and her own party.

The Communist Party of Nepal (UML) remained neutral during the voting, while the Rastriya Prajatantra Party voted against her.

Earlier, the House had rejected the candidacy of Saraswati Lama, who was nominated by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party. Her proposal received only five votes in favor, while 215 members voted against it and 37 abstained.

Thakur’s election marks a significant development in the parliamentary leadership, highlighting both generational change and shifting political alignments within the House.
