Kathmandu: In the ongoing 20th edition of the World Aquatics Championship-2023 in Fukuoka, Japan, Nepali swimmer Gaurika Singh has once again showcased her talent by setting a new national record in the individual performance.

Gaurika, who had previously clinched a gold medal in the South Asian Games (SAG), achieved this feat by completing the 50-meter backstroke in an impressive 31.44 seconds. This achievement surpasses her own previous national record of 31.87 seconds in the same category.

Her remarkable progress in swimming's 50-meter backstroke category has been evident since the 12th SAG championship held in India back in 2016, where she had initially set the national record.

Similarly, another Nepali swimmer, Alexander Shah, has also left his mark on the championship. Competing in the men's 100-meter freestyle category, he managed to set a new national record with a time of 52.94 seconds, slightly bettering his previous record of 52.96 seconds, which he had established during the 11th NSA Cup Championship.

The Nepali Swimming Association's Chairperson, Ashok Bajracharya, shared the news of these outstanding performances by Gaurika and Alexander. However, it's worth noting that two other Nepali swimmers, Dubana Lama and Alexander (probably a different swimmer with the same name), are yet to showcase their talents in the 100-meter and 40-meter freestyle categories, respectively.

Overall, the Nepali swimmers are making their mark in the World Aquatics Championship-2023, and their achievements highlight their dedication and determination in the sport.
