Kathmandu: Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, has pledged unwavering commitment to conclude the investigation into the gold smuggling scandal and bring the culprits to justice. In response to parliamentary inquiries during a House of Representatives (HoR) meeting, DPM Shrestha affirmed the government's determination to conduct an impartial investigation.
Shrestha emphasized the government's focus on conducting a thorough investigation and called for a conducive environment to facilitate the conclusion of the inquiry. He discouraged the formation of parallel investigative committees, asserting the need to trust the state's investigative mechanisms. He also mentioned the possibility of considering alternative approaches if the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) fails to complete the investigation within the designated time frame or if any irregularities are uncovered during the process.
The gold smuggling case, which involved the seizure of 155 kg of gold concealed within brake shoes in front of the Customs Office at Tribhuvan International Airport on July 18, has been handed over to the CIB for further investigation. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' directed the Department of Revenue Investigation to transfer the case to the CIB.
Shrestha assured the public that the government remains committed to resolving the issue and sought support from all stakeholders. He also addressed another case of gold smuggling involving electric cigarettes and promised to bring the perpetrators to justice. Highlighting the need for comprehensive security management at the airport, he underscored the importance of revising security policies and implementing effective action plans.
DPM Shrestha criticized the investigation committee established during the leadership of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, noting its failure to identify the culprits behind the smuggling of over 7,999 kg of gold between 2070 BS and 2074 BS. He expressed concern over Nepal becoming a transit point for gold smuggling, highlighting its potential negative impact on the national economy, security, and neighboring countries.
Regarding the Lalita Niwas Land Grab Scam, DPM Shrestha noted the Supreme Court's recent order for additional investigation into those involved in decision-making and execution at the ministerial level. He emphasized the government's directive to the police to conduct an impartial and truthful investigation based on facts and evidence.
Concluding his remarks, Shrestha affirmed that no individual found guilty in the scam would be spared, regardless of their political affiliation. He assured that anyone implicated would face prosecution, demonstrating the government's commitment to addressing corruption and ensuring accountability. Shrestha also acknowledged the government's awareness of public livelihood concerns, particularly in the Madhesh Province, and indicated plans to address issues related to drought, drinking water, irrigation, and food security in the region.
