Kabul: Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, has called on the Taliban to lift the ban on women working in non-governmental organisations (NGOs). He emphasized the crucial role of women in the economy and highlighted their contributions as essential for the well-being and progress of Afghan society.

In a statement marking the first anniversary of the Taliban's ban on women working in NGOs, Bennett urged the lifting of the ban, emphasizing that education and work are vital components of a full and dignified life. The Taliban's Ministry of Economy had imposed the ban on December 24, 2022, instructing domestic and international NGOs to suspend the employment of women workers until further notice.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the ban has significantly impacted Afghanistan's economy, particularly as the country relies on humanitarian aid. The economic expert, Mohammad Nabi, emphasized the need for the Taliban to establish a proper mechanism to provide work for women in government offices, contributing to the country's development.

Earlier this month, the United Nations Women's Division called on the international community to support Afghan women and girls, urging nations to listen to their voices and invest in their resistance. The organization emphasized standing with Afghan women and girls in their fight for rights and freedom, acknowledging the challenges they face under the Taliban's rule.
