Kathmandu: A powerful earthquake has struck Afghanistan, killing at least 1,100 people and injuring more than 3,500. Thousands more are feared trapped under collapsed buildings, while at least 1,000 homes have been destroyed.
According to the Taliban-controlled administration, the worst-hit districts include Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapa Pass in Kunar province. Most of the affected houses, built from soft soil and mud, crumbled under the impact.
Rescue Operations Hampered by Landslides
The earthquake triggered landslides, blocking roads and severely hampering rescue and relief efforts. Authorities are racing against time to save those trapped under rubble. The Red Cross has warned that such disasters are frequent in Afghanistan due to its high-risk seismic zone.
Magnitude and Regional Impact
The US Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated that between 1,000 and 10,000 deaths were possible, with more than 1.1 million people exposed to very strong to violent shaking. The tremors were felt across Pakistan and India, including major cities like Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore, and New Delhi.
Most of the affected homes were built using traditional mud and stone materials, making them highly vulnerable to collapse during quakes.
