Kathmandu: With the monsoon gaining strength, Kanyam in Ilam recorded the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, measuring 146 mm by Wednesday evening, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Significant rainfall was also reported in Bahundangi (Jhapa) with 125 mm, Anarmani (Jhapa) with 112 mm, Chatra (Sunsari) with 112 mm, and Gaighat (Udayapur) with 114.4 mm. Kaski received 124 mm, while Gobre in Sindhupalchowk recorded 108 mm, the department confirmed.

Additionally, nine other weather stations reported rainfall between 80 and 100 mm, and more than 50 stations recorded 50 to 60 mm.

Department Information Officer Dinkar Kayastha warned that monsoon activity will further intensify in western Nepal over the next 24 hours. Currently, skies are overcast nationwide, with moderate rain occurring in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces.

The Weather Forecasting Division stated that the monsoon’s low-pressure line lies near the Terai, making the western region more vulnerable today. This afternoon, hilly areas in Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces will remain generally cloudy, while other regions will see partial cloud cover. Moderate rainfall is likely in Lumbini, Karnali, Sudurpaschim, and Madhesh provinces, with heavy downpours forecasted in one or two places in Gandaki, Lumbini, Sudurpaschim, and Karnali’s hilly areas.

Authorities have warned of increased risks of landslides, debris flows, and rising water levels in rivers and streams, potentially disrupting transportation services. Residents are advised to stay alert and take precautionary measures.
