Over 7,500 Disaster Incidents Reported in a Year; 490 Lives Lost

Kathmandu: Nepal witnessed a total of 7,547 disaster-related incidents over the past year, directly affecting 13,544 families, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

The report highlights that disasters such as floods, landslides, heavy rainfall, lightning, forest fires, windstorms, and avalanches caused significant loss of life and property. Among these, fire incidents—many of which are preventable—were the most frequent.

Major Findings

Fire Incidents:
A total of 3,652 fire incidents were recorded, resulting in 104 deaths and 563 injuries. These incidents alone affected 4,182 families.

Floods:
In 328 flood incidents, 39 people lost their lives, 27 went missing, and 14 were injured.

Landslides:
A total of 621 landslide incidents caused 76 deaths.

Heavy Rainfall:
In 446 incidents of heavy rain, 7 people died and 20 were injured.

Lightning Strikes:
There were 419 lightning incidents, resulting in 48 deaths, 312 injuries, and impacting 522 families.

Other Incidents:
The report also recorded 477 windstorm incidents, 324 forest fires, 509 animal attacks, and 131 avalanche-related incidents.

Overall Impact
During the reporting period (April 1 to April 24 of the year under review), disasters claimed a total of 490 lives, left 38 people missing, and injured 1,965 individuals across the country.

The authority emphasized the need for improved preparedness, awareness, and preventive measures—especially for fire-related incidents—to reduce future risks and human and economic losses.
