Kyiv: Russian missiles struck a children's hospital in Kyiv on Monday, resulting in three fatalities, while another attack in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih killed at least 10 people. This represents the most extensive bombardment of Kyiv in several months.
The daylight attacks included the use of Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, one of the most advanced weapons in the Russian arsenal, according to the Ukrainian air force. These missiles travel at 10 times the speed of sound, making them difficult to intercept. The blasts caused buildings in Kyiv to shake.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia targeted five cities with over 40 different types of missiles, striking apartment buildings and public infrastructure.
In Kryvyi Rih, 31 people were injured in addition to the 10 deaths, as reported by Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of the city's administration. This massive missile attack caused significant damage and casualties.
There was no immediate information on casualties at Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital, Ukraine's largest pediatric medical facility, which was also hit.
The Kyiv city administration reported falling debris, presumably from intercepted missiles, in several areas, causing fires. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from various neighborhoods in the city.
Andrii Yermak, the head of Ukraine's presidential office, noted that the attack occurred during a time when many people were on the streets. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that official assessments of the attack's impact were still being conducted.
Explosions were also reported in the central Dnipropetrovsk region by local officials.
This attack took place on the eve of a three-day NATO summit in Washington, where discussions will focus on how to reassure Ukraine of the alliance’s unwavering support and provide hope that the country can endure Europe's largest conflict since World War II.
