Kathmandu: The Hindu festival of Teej, also known as 'Haritalika,' is being celebrated across Nepal today, with women throughout the country participating in the festivities. This special occasion, observed primarily by Nepali Hindu women, is dedicated to fasting and prayers for the well-being and longevity of their spouses.

The three-day festival begins with 'Dar,' a feast enjoyed the day before the fast, followed by a day of fasting and cultural celebrations. Women observe rituals, offer worship to Lord Shiva, and participate in jubilant dancing and singing, symbolizing sisterhood as they gather at their maternal homes.

Teej has its roots in the legend of Parbati, who fasted for the health and prosperity of her husband, Lord Shiva. Since then, this day has been marked as Haritalika Teej, with women dressing in red, wearing bangles, and adorning themselves with traditional ornaments.

Devotees, both married and unmarried, visit temples, including the renowned Pashupatinath Temple, to perform pooja and observe fasting for a happy and prosperous marital life.

In honor of the festival, the government has declared a public holiday for women today.
