Nepal and China to Sign MoU on Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network

Kathmandu: Nepal and China have agreed to enhance bilateral connectivity and cooperation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network and the Framework for Belt and Road Cooperation. This initiative aims to transform Nepal from a land-locked to a land-linked nation by strengthening connectivity in infrastructure sectors such as ports, roads, railways, aviation, power grids, and telecommunications.

The announcement follows the conclusion of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli's four-day visit to China, during which significant agreements were reached:

Key Highlights:

Infrastructure and Connectivity Projects:

-Advancing the China-aided Araniko Highway Maintenance Project and Hilsa-Simikot Road Project.
-Implementation of the second phase of the Kathmandu Ring Road Improvement Project.
-Feasibility study approval for the Tokha-Chhahare Tunnel.
-Expediting repair and construction on the Syaphrubesi-Rasuwagadhi Highway.
-Feasibility study of the Jilong/Keyrung-Kathmandu Cross-Border Railway.

Economic and Trade Cooperation:

-Development of economic corridors: Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali.
-Enhanced facilitation for customs clearance and two-way travel.
-Resumption of operations at 14 traditional China-Nepal border trade points.

Zero-Tariff Trade and Agriculture:

-China granted zero-tariff treatment to Nepal under 100% tariff lines.
-Expanding the export of Nepal's agricultural products like haylage, medicinal materials, and tea to China.

Energy Collaboration:

Feasibility study of the Jilong/Keyrung-Rasuwagadhi-Chilime 220KV Cross-Border Power Transmission Line.

Cultural, Educational, and Tourism Initiatives:

Promoting tourism through events such as the Nepal Visit Year 2025 and cultural festivals like the China-Nepal Friendship Dragon-Boat Race Festival.
Expanding educational exchanges and supporting Chinese language education in Nepal.
Establishment of a new CAR-T Cell Laboratory for cancer treatment in Kathmandu.

Bilateral Commitments:

-Upholding the principles of peaceful coexistence and respecting each other's sovereignty.
-Strengthening law enforcement cooperation, including combating cybercrime.
-Collaborating within international frameworks such as the United Nations.


Both sides commended the progress in bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1955. Prime Minister Oli expressed gratitude for China’s support, while the Chinese government reiterated its commitment to assisting Nepal in its development goals, particularly the national aspiration of "Samriddha Nepal, Sukhi Nepali" (Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali).

Strategic Partnership for a Shared Future
The visit also marked a milestone in fostering a deeper strategic partnership, as Nepal and China look forward to the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025. Leaders emphasized the significance of high-level exchanges and mutual cooperation to promote regional stability and prosperity.
