Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested the possibility of imposing additional sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin does not agree to negotiate a peace deal to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.

When asked by reporters at the White House on Tuesday about the likelihood of new sanctions, Trump responded, "Sounds likely."

Ahead of his inauguration on Monday, Trump vowed to end the Ukraine war swiftly, raising expectations that he might use U.S. aid as leverage to encourage Ukraine to make concessions to Russia, which invaded in February 2022.

In rare criticism of Putin, Trump stated on Monday that the Russian president "should make a deal," adding, "I think he's destroying Russia by not making a deal."

Trump also revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had expressed interest in reaching a peace agreement to bring an end to the devastating conflict.

The comments mark a notable development in Trump's foreign policy stance, with potential implications for U.S.-Russia relations and the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
