London: The United Kingdom announced on Monday that a "significant number" of nations have committed to providing troops for a proposed coalition aimed at safeguarding any ceasefire agreement in Ukraine. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesperson said that over 30 countries are expected to take part in the so-called "coalition of the willing."
“The prime minister said over the weekend that different countries will bring different capabilities to the table,” the spokesperson told reporters. “But these are now moving into operational discussions about what exactly the coalition can provide.”
Coalition of the Willing Gains Momentum
The proposed coalition, spearheaded by Prime Minister Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, is intended to bolster Ukraine’s security and deter Russia from violating a future ceasefire. The two leaders intensified their efforts after U.S. President Donald Trump launched direct negotiations with Russia last month, seeking to bring an end to the war.
Troop Contributions Under Discussion
While Starmer and Macron have indicated their readiness to deploy British and French troops to Ukraine, it remains unclear which other countries are prepared to commit ground forces. Starmer’s spokesperson emphasized that not all contributions will be in the form of combat troops.
“There will be engineering support, the use of airfields, housing for crews, logistics, and surveillance,” he said, highlighting a broad range of possible roles nations could play.
Next Steps: Operational Planning
The coalition plan is reportedly entering its "operational phase," with military chiefs from dozens of nations scheduled to convene in the UK on Thursday. This meeting is expected to refine the coalition's structure and the specific roles member nations will play.
Starmer briefed 26 fellow leaders, as well as the heads of the European Union and NATO, during a virtual call on Saturday, laying out the next steps in advancing the multinational effort.
A Complement to US Efforts
While Trump’s direct talks with Russia are ongoing, Starmer and Macron argue that the coalition will provide essential security guarantees for Ukraine, ensuring any ceasefire is enforced and deterring further Russian aggression.
The precise timeline for the deployment of coalition troops or the implementation of security measures has not yet been disclosed.
