Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the European Union (EU) has a strong plan to retaliate if the United States imposes new tariffs, while still hoping for a negotiated solution.

Speaking at a European Parliament session on Tuesday, von der Leyen emphasized that the EU remains open to discussions but will not hesitate to protect its interests if required. "We are open to negotiations, but we have a strong plan to retaliate if necessary," she said.

US President Donald Trump is expected to announce a new set of tariffs against multiple countries, which he has referred to as a "Liberation Day" initiative aimed at addressing perceived trade imbalances.

Von der Leyen said the EU would carefully assess the US announcements before determining an appropriate response. She also noted that she had been consulting with EU leaders regarding possible next steps.

"Europe has not started this confrontation," she stated. "Our objective is a negotiated solution. But of course, if need be, we will protect our interests, our people, and our companies." She assured that Europe would respond with unity and determination if a trade conflict escalates.

Trump's aggressive tariffs strategy has raised concerns about a global trade war, with major economies like China, Canada, and the EU bracing for possible retaliation.

The EU has already been impacted by several US tariff measures since Trump's return to office in January. These include a 25-percent tariff on auto imports, set to take effect on Thursday, and a 25-percent levy on steel and aluminum imports, which will trigger EU countermeasures in mid-April.
