Kathmandu: Myanmar authorities have once again failed to auction Aung San Suu Kyi’s historic lakeside villa in Yangon, as the property attracted no bidders for the fourth time, despite the price being lowered to $128 million.
The two-story bungalow on University Avenue Road, where Suu Kyi spent years under house arrest and led Myanmar’s democratic movement, is jointly owned by her and her estranged brother. The military-appointed court has ordered the sale, with Suu Kyi legally entitled to half the proceeds.
The auction, conducted under tight police presence and media observation, was declared unsuccessful after no offers were made.
Suu Kyi, currently imprisoned in Naypyidaw following the 2021 military coup, previously used the home as a symbol of resistance and a platform for democratic speeches. Once visited by world leaders including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the villa’s political and historical importance remains unmatched.
Real estate experts say the asking price far exceeds market rates, especially amid Myanmar’s ongoing economic collapse and civil unrest, leaving few capable of making such a large investment.
