Yangon: The Government of Nepal has extended humanitarian assistance to earthquake-stricken Myanmar by donating 27 tons of relief materials. The aid, aimed at supporting victims of the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on March 28, was handed over at Nay Pyi Taw International Airport on Thursday morning.

The relief consignment includes food items, daily essentials, medicines, and health supplies. The materials were formally handed over by a Nepali delegation led by Joint Secretary Tapas Adhikari, Chief of the South East Asia Division at Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Present during the handover were Nepali Ambassador to Myanmar Harish Chandra Ghimire and senior Myanmar officials. A brief meeting was held between officials from both countries, during which Joint Secretary Adhikari expressed condolences for the lives lost and wished a swift recovery to the injured.

Adhikari also recalled Myanmar’s generous support to Nepal during the 2015 earthquake and stated, “At this difficult time, the Government of Nepal, together with the private sector, has come forward to provide relief to the people of Myanmar. We stand in solidarity and will continue to offer support in the future.”

Myanmar official Heu Wai Lwin expressed gratitude to Nepal for its timely assistance. He reported that over 3,590 people have lost their lives, 4,800 have been injured, and 148 remain missing as a result of the disaster.

The 16-member Nepali delegation also included government officials and media representatives. Meanwhile, a Nepali Army medical team stationed in Myanmar has been providing emergency medical services to quake survivors, having treated over 1,300 affected individuals so far.

In addition, a Nepali community organization in Myanmar has been offering shelter to around 250 Nepali nationals displaced by the earthquake.
