Kathmandu: Tensions between India and Pakistan continue to rise following India’s airstrikes under Operation Sindoor, with renewed shelling reported from the Pakistani side in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. Indian forces have responded in kind, though no casualties have been confirmed from either side so far.
According to Indian defense sources, Pakistan’s military shelled the Karnah area of Kupwara district for the second consecutive night, shortly after India carried out coordinated airstrikes on nine alleged terrorist camps across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir at 1:05 AM on Tuesday.
The Indian strikes, which reportedly killed over 100 militants, including close associates of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar, were launched in retaliation for the April 22 attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 Indian tourists. Indian sources also claimed that 24 missiles were used in the precision strike, with high-value targets destroyed.
The operation’s codename, Operation Sindoor, is said to be inspired by the sacrifices of the wives of those killed in the Pahalgam attack. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the military action as a symbol of "New India" and praised the coordination of the army, navy, and air force.
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif addressed parliament, calling India’s strikes a “cowardly attack” and promising a strong and proportionate response. The border tension has sparked international concern, with fears mounting over the potential for further escalation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
The United Nations and several global powers have reiterated calls for restraint, urging both sides to resolve their differences through dialogue.
