Kathmandu: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has terminated its agreement with a drinking water supplier and imposed a fine of Rs 200,000 after coliform bacteria was detected in the water supplied to its central office.

The Department of Agriculture and Livestock under KMC confirmed that the contract with CN Enterprises was canceled following the discovery during a technical test of the water quality. The decision was made at the level of the Chief Administrative Officer, said department head Nurnidhi Neupane.

Neupane stated that the letter sent to the supplier cited Section 19 of the KMC Market Management and Monitoring Act 2077, and the fine was levied under Section 30 of the same Act.

Coliform bacteria are commonly used as an indicator of potential water contamination, and their presence raises serious public health concerns.
