Kathmandu: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to discuss the purchase of U.S. weapons with former President Donald Trump during the G-7 summit, underscoring Ukraine's continued reliance on American support in its war against Russia.
Speaking to reporters in Vienna on his way to Canada for the summit, Zelensky clarified, “We will not talk about additional aid with the US today. One of the issues I will discuss with President Trump is the defense package Ukraine is ready to purchase.”
Zelensky, who has been leading Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression for over three years, emphasized the critical nature of U.S. assistance. “I cannot imagine how we will fight and survive without the help of the United States—and I do not want to,” he said.
He also warned against the potential collapse of the US-Europe alliance, urging leaders to maintain unity in support of Ukraine.
Describing the G-7 summit as an “extremely important” platform, Zelensky said it offers a key opportunity to apply pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the war. He added that discussions would include the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine and reinforcing sanctions against Moscow.
Before heading to Canada, Zelensky met with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen in Vienna. According to a statement from Zelensky’s office, the two leaders discussed Austria’s contribution to Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction, including mine clearance, energy assistance, and food security.
President Van der Bellen reaffirmed Austria’s political support for Ukraine, despite the country’s military neutrality. Austria, which previously maintained close economic ties with Russia, has significantly reduced those relations since the war began.
However, Zelensky’s visit was not welcomed by all. Austria’s far-right opposition FPÖ party openly criticized the Ukrainian president’s presence in the country.
