Kathmandu: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced what he called a “huge” trade agreement with Japan, under which Japanese exports will face a 15% tariff. Posting on his platform Truth Social, Trump claimed the deal is the largest ever, expected to generate millions of American jobs and bring in $550 billion in Japanese investment, with the U.S. earning 90% of the profits.

The agreement comes just days before an August 1 deadline, after which Trump had warned of a 25% tariff if no deal was reached.

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, speaking from Tokyo, said he would withhold comment until thoroughly reviewing the deal’s details. He noted the sensitivity around certain sectors like rice imports, where Japan has previously resisted concessions.

According to Trump, the agreement includes market access for U.S. cars, trucks, rice, and other agricultural goods, though Japanese officials have yet to confirm the specifics.

The Japan deal is part of a series of pre-deadline trade moves by Trump. He also announced a separate agreement with the Philippines, imposing a 19% tariff, and similar arrangements with Indonesia and Vietnam. However, talks are still ongoing with China, Canada, and Mexico, America’s top three trading partners.
