Kathmandu: Nepal Police has issued a warning about a new cyber fraud method that uses attractive advertisements and fake apps on social media platforms. Recently, an app named ‘Nepse AI’ has been found luring users with false promises of high profits in the stock market.
How the Scam Works
According to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police, fraudsters promote misleading ads on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to convince users to download the app. Once installed, hackers gain remote access to the victim’s phone, instantly transferring all funds from their bank account. To cover their tracks, the hackers delete all data and apps from the phone, erasing evidence of the crime.
Victim Loses Over Rs. 2.8 Million
In one reported case, a person lost Rs. 2.861 million from their bank account after downloading the fake app through a similar online advertisement.
Police Safety Guidelines
-The Cyber Bureau has advised the public to take the following precautions:
-Use two-factor authentication or SMS verification for social media security.
-Regularly update passwords.
-Never share digital device details with strangers.
-Install apps only from official sources.
The Bureau has urged individuals to report such incidents immediately to their bank, financial institution, or the nearest police station.
