Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called for making the global governance system more effective, inclusive, and centered on the United Nations, while expressing support for China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI). Oli made these remarks on Monday during his address to the ‘Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus Meeting’ in China, where he is on an official visit.
Backing for Global Governance Initiative
Oli said the GGI proposed by China will strengthen the multilateral system by making it fair and equitable for all, ensuring a shared future for the global community. “No nation can be safe alone. No people can prosper in isolation. That is why multilateralism is the necessity of our time,” he stated.
Challenges to Peace and Stability
The Prime Minister warned that although technological progress is advancing rapidly, it is overshadowed by inequality, economic instability, climate emergencies, and borderless conflicts. “The rules-based order is challenged. Peace and justice are still far away. Multilateralism is in crisis,” he remarked, stressing that promises without progress erode trust.
Regional Cooperation and Common Goals
Highlighting the role of the SCO in rejuvenating multilateralism, Oli urged member states to enhance unity and resilience to face geopolitical, economic, and ecological challenges. He emphasized the need to tackle terrorism, cyber threats, pandemics, and climate change collectively. “The mountains, a symbol of global climate stability, are losing their snowpack, threatening billions in low-lying regions,” he warned.
Nepal’s Commitment to Regional Integration
Oli reaffirmed Nepal’s unwavering commitment to regional cooperation and strong relations with SCO members. He called for moving “from isolation to networking, from confrontation to consultation, and from competition to cooperation,” to promote peace, progress, and prosperity through physical, economic, digital, and cultural connectivity.
Appeal for Dialogue and Diplomacy
Emphasizing the Shanghai Spirit, Oli stressed the need for dialogue, diplomacy, and partnership over division. “By working together regionally and globally, we can build a just, inclusive, and resilient system for sustainable development,” he said. Oli concluded by expressing Nepal’s full support for a rules-based multilateral system and wished success to the SCO meeting and prosperity for its member states.
