Kathmandu: The House of Representatives meeting on Tuesday was adjourned after opposition parties continued to obstruct proceedings, demanding that Prime Minister Balendra Shah clarify and retract his recent statement regarding the Nepal-India border.
From the outset of the meeting, opposition lawmakers staged protests and chanted slogans while Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal attempted to read a letter concerning the certification of a bill received from the President’s Office. Opposition members later moved toward the
Speaker’s rostrum and continued their demonstrations, preventing the House from proceeding with its scheduled agenda.
Amid the disruption and rising tensions, Speaker Aryal adjourned the meeting until Jestha 25.
Nepali Congress Demands Apology
The main opposition party, Nepali Congress, reiterated its demand that the Prime Minister withdraw his statement and issue a public apology in Parliament.
Speaking during the meeting, Congress Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Abhishek Pratap Shah said the Prime Minister’s remarks on a sensitive issue related to national sovereignty were unacceptable.
He warned that the opposition would not allow Parliament to function normally until the Prime Minister either retracts the statement or personally appears before the House to apologize.
According to Shah, the Congress will continue to oppose the statement both inside Parliament and through political activities outside the House.
Harkaraj Rai Calls for Clarification
Chairman of the Shram Sanskriti Party, Harkaraj Rai, also strongly objected to the Prime Minister’s remarks and urged all political parties to unite on issues related to national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Rai argued that if the Prime Minister made the statement without factual evidence, he should apologize not only to Parliament but to the Nepali people as a whole. He demanded that the Prime Minister appear before the House and clearly explain the basis of his comments regarding the Nepal-India border.
Questions Raised Over Prime Minister’s Attendance
During his address, Rai also raised constitutional and procedural questions regarding the Prime Minister’s attendance in Parliament.
Referring to provisions of the House of Representatives Rules and the Constitution, he demanded that the parliamentary records branch disclose details of the Prime Minister’s attendance in House meetings.
Rai argued that transparency regarding attendance records is necessary and called for official clarification on the Prime Minister’s participation in parliamentary proceedings since assuming office.
Political Deadlock Continues
The latest disruption has further deepened the political standoff between the government and opposition parties. With opposition lawmakers insisting on an apology and clarification from the Prime Minister, uncertainty remains over when normal parliamentary business, including budget discussions, will resume.
The adjournment until Jestha 25 signals that the controversy surrounding the Prime Minister’s border-related remarks is likely to remain at the center of Nepal’s political debate in the coming days.
