Kathmandu: The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have announced the creation of a new “humanitarian zone” in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, as preparations intensify for a fresh military operation in Gaza City. The IDF said the zone would provide food, medicine, and essential supplies for displaced residents.
Civilians Reluctant to Leave Gaza City
Despite the declaration, a majority of Gaza City residents have refused to relocate. Samer Abu Samra, a father of four, said the area was already overcrowded with no transport or shelter. Teacher Nasser al-Attar echoed similar concerns, saying southern Gaza was unsafe, leaving families “forced to stay” in the city.
Social activists estimate that around 80 percent of Gazans remain in Gaza City. Abu Luai, from the al-Shati refugee camp, said residents felt trapped, accusing Israel of trying to empty the city through siege, starvation, and bombardment.
Airstrikes Destroy Residential Towers
Israeli airstrikes have destroyed several large residential towers in Gaza City. While Israel claims the buildings were being used by Hamas for spy equipment, tower administrators denied the allegations. Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said the strikes were intended to intimidate civilians into fleeing.
Hamas Condemns ‘Forced Displacement’
Hamas has denounced the latest attacks as part of a “policy of forced displacement.” The group reiterated its commitment to a 60-day ceasefire, but insisted that any future deal must include:
-Complete withdrawal of Israeli troops
-Unhindered humanitarian aid delivery
-Prisoner exchanges
Humanitarian Toll Mounts
The war, which erupted on October 7, 2023, after Hamas attacks killed 1,200 Israelis, has since claimed more than 64,000 Palestinian lives and injured over 161,000, according to Gaza’s health authorities.
