Kathmandu: Following the arson and vandalism of the International Conference Center (ICC) in Naya Baneshwor during the Gen-G movement on Bhadra 23, the Parliament Secretariat has begun preparations to hold the upcoming session of the National Assembly at the Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Resources Committee Hall in Singha Durbar.
Joint Secretary and Parliament Secretariat Spokesperson Ekram Giri stated that the last session of the National Assembly ended in mid-Bhadra, and as per the constitutional provision, the next session must be convened within six months. However, since the ICC was heavily damaged by fire, it is no longer usable for parliamentary proceedings.
According to Giri, two alternatives are currently under consideration for the venue of the next session:
Completing the under-construction Parliament Building within the stipulated time.
Holding the session at the Agriculture Committee Hall in Singha Durbar if construction is delayed.
He noted that the Agriculture Committee Hall had previously hosted National Assembly meetings and is therefore a practical option. However, logistical challenges remain — including the management of audiences, media personnel, audio-visual systems, and live broadcasting facilities.
During the Gen-G protests on Bhadra 23 and 24, demonstrators set fire to and vandalized key government structures, including the Parliament Building, Singha Durbar, Supreme Court, political party offices, and police stations. The Parliament Secretariat is therefore working to secure an alternative venue ahead of the government’s decision to formally convene the next parliamentary session.
