Kathmandu: The election for the National Assembly (NA) Chairperson took place during today's meeting of the upper house. Narayan Dahal, representing the ruling alliance, and Yubaraj Sharma from the major opposition Nepali Congress were the two candidates contesting for the coveted position. Their nominations were officially registered on Monday.

During the session, Ananda Prasad Dhungana of Nepali Congress presented Yubaraj Sharma's candidacy, emphasizing Sharma's dedication to democracy and development. Dhungana accused Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' of deviating from the people's mandate by breaking the alliance with Nepali Congress. He argued that the alliance with the Maoist Centre was initially formed to stabilize the political landscape and prevent frequent changes in government.

Support for Sharma's candidacy was echoed by Kiran Babu Shrestha and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal's Kishore Kumar Singh. They highlighted Sharma's competence and commitment to the country's progress.

On the other side, Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achhami, a lawmaker from CPN (Maoist Centre), proposed Narayan Dahal's candidacy, emphasizing Dahal's alignment with the new political alliance striving for social justice and national prosperity. CPN (UML) lawmaker Devendra Dahal, Beduram Bhusal of CPN (Unified Socialist), and Mohammed Khalid of Janata Samajbadi Party also lent their support to Narayan Dahal.

Narayan Dahala's decisive victory in the National Assembly chair election signifies a key development in the current political landscape, with the ruling alliance consolidating its position in the upper house.
