Eight Killed, Several Injured in Car Blast Near Delhi’s Red Fort

Delhi: At least eight people were killed and seven others injured, three of them seriously, after a blast occurred in a Hyundai i20 car near the Subhash Marg traffic signal close to Red Fort around 7 pm on Monday, officials confirmed.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the explosion damaged several nearby vehicles and injured pedestrians. “Within 10 minutes of receiving the information of the blast, teams from the Delhi Crime Branch and Delhi Special Branch arrived at the spot,” Shah told ANI, adding that preliminary reports indicate some fatalities.

He said that the NSG, NIA, and FSL teams have begun a thorough investigation, examining CCTV footage from the area. “All possibilities are being explored, and the results will be shared with the public,” Shah said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken stock of the situation and spoken with the Home Minister to receive updates on the investigation, government sources said.

Blast Near Red Fort Metro Station
According to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, a slow-moving vehicle had stopped at the red light near Red Fort Metro Station when the explosion occurred. “Nearby vehicles were also damaged. Some people have died, and several are injured. All agencies including the FSL and NIA are on the spot,” Golcha said, confirming that the Home Minister is being briefed regularly.
Fire Under Control

Deputy Chief Fire Officer A.K. Malik said that seven fire units were immediately dispatched to the site. “At 7:29 pm, the fire was brought under control. All our teams are present at the spot,” he said.
Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses described scenes of devastation and panic. “We saw body parts scattered on the road. Cars were shattered, and people were screaming,” said a local resident. Another eyewitness said, “I fell down three times because of the force of the blast. It was the loudest explosion I’ve ever heard.”

Casualties and Injuries
According to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital, 15 people were brought in following the blast. “Eight were declared dead before arrival, three are seriously injured, and one is in stable condition,” said the Medical Superintendent.

Authorities have cordoned off the area, and forensic and bomb disposal teams are conducting detailed inspections. The cause of the explosion is yet to be officially confirmed.
