Kathmandu: Bangladesh on Monday formally demanded the immediate extradition of ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been sentenced to death on charges of crimes against humanity.

A Dhaka court handed down the death sentence in absentia to Hasina, 78, along with former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Both are believed to have fled to New Delhi or another Indian city following the August 2015 uprising.

In a statement, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the Indian government to immediately hand over the two convicted leaders, warning that offering them refuge would be “extremely unfriendly and a travesty of justice.”

India responded by saying it had “taken note” of the matter.

Meanwhile, interim government chief and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus welcomed the court’s verdict, calling it “historic.”
