Moscow: Russia on Thursday cautioned the United States against taking steps that could lead to what it described as a “fatal mistake” in the ongoing Venezuela crisis, urging restraint and warning of wider regional consequences.
The warning came after US President Donald Trump ordered a blockade of sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers earlier this week, a move seen as a fresh escalation in tensions between Washington and the South American nation led by President Nicolás Maduro.
In a statement, Russia’s foreign ministry said it hoped the White House would avoid actions that could further destabilize the situation and lead to “unpredictable consequences for the entire Western hemisphere.” Moscow called for de-escalation and reiterated its support for the Maduro government.
The Kremlin said it remains in “constant contact” with Venezuela, which it described as an ally and strategic partner. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov urged countries in the region to exercise restraint to prevent any unforeseen developments.
Venezuela, meanwhile, has downplayed the impact of the US move, insisting that its crude oil exports have not been affected.
Maduro, a long-time ally of Moscow, has maintained close ties with Russia, frequently visiting the country over the years. Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed his support for Maduro during a phone conversation earlier this month.
Uncertainty remains over how the blockade will be enforced, with US naval assets reportedly present in the Caribbean. Trump’s remarks claiming Venezuela was “completely surrounded” by a large naval force have fueled concerns about the possibility of further confrontation or intervention.
Russia has previously played a role in supporting Venezuela’s economy amid international sanctions and continues to position itself as a key backer of the Caracas government.
