Kathmandu: India’s East Bengal Club clinched the title of the inaugural South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Club Championship with a convincing 3–0 victory over Nepal’s APF Club in the final held at Dasharath Stadium, Tripureshwar, on Friday.
East Bengal captain Fazila Equaput starred in the final, scoring twice, while Shilkidevi Hanam added another to seal the title. Fazila opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, capitalising on a lapse in coordination between APF goalkeeper Anjana Rana Magar and defender Geeta Rana.
East Bengal doubled their lead in the 35th minute when Shilkidevi Hanam headed home from a corner delivered by Sarita Yumnam and flicked on by Asha Lata. Shortly after the restart, Fazila struck again to register her second goal of the match and put the result beyond doubt.
Despite efforts from APF, no further goals were scored, and East Bengal comfortably saw out the match to lift the championship trophy.
The tournament, organised for the first time by SAFF and held from December 5, featured clubs from five countries. Alongside finalists East Bengal and APF, the competition included Karachi City FC of Pakistan, Nasir Sports Academy of Bangladesh, and Transport United of Bhutan.
