Kathmandu: Thousands of citizens took to the streets of Greenland’s capital Nuuk on Saturday to protest US President Donald Trump’s threatening remarks and his controversial proposal to purchase Greenland.

‘Greenland Is Not for Sale’
Braving freezing snow and icy conditions, demonstrators marched carrying national flags and placards reading “Greenland is not for sale,” voicing strong support for the island’s autonomy and sovereignty. The protest began in downtown Nuuk and culminated at the US Consulate.

Anger Intensifies Over New Tariff Announcement
The protest gained further momentum after President Trump, speaking from Florida while demonstrations were underway, announced a 10 percent import tax on goods from eight European countries. Local youth Malik Dollerup-Schebel said the move reflected Trump’s insensitivity toward other nations and their people.

Largest Protest in Nuuk’s History
According to Prime Minister Jens-Friedrich Nielsen and local security officials, the demonstration drew nearly a quarter of Nuuk’s total population, making it the largest protest ever held in the city.

International Solidarity
Solidarity rallies were also organized in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Nunavut, Canada, sending a unified message that no small nation or culture is a commodity to be bought or sold.

Firm Rejection of Trump’s Proposal
Although Greenland is a self-governing territory rich in mineral resources and of strategic importance, local leaders and citizens have firmly rejected President Trump’s push to acquire it. Calling the idea “unwise,” protesters stressed their determination to defend Greenland’s identity and future.

Nurse Louise Lennart Olsen, who joined the rally, expressed hope that the American public would also raise their voices against what she described as wrongdoing by their president, and stand in support of Greenland’s sovereignty.
