Colombo: According to the Epidemiology Unit of Sri Lanka's Health Ministry, the number of reported dengue cases this year has exceeded 50,000. As of Wednesday, a total of 50,264 cases have been reported across the country. The district with the highest number of cases is Gampaha, which is the second-most populous district in Sri Lanka.

In response to the growing dengue threat, the Epidemiology Unit has identified 43 high-risk areas for dengue and has launched mosquito eradication campaigns in these locations. These efforts aim to reduce mosquito breeding sites and control the spread of the disease.

Tragically, the unit has confirmed 31 deaths related to dengue so far in 2023. This highlights the severity of the situation and the urgent need for preventive measures.

Additionally, the meteorology department has predicted heavy rainfall in the upcoming days. Unfortunately, this weather condition can further encourage the breeding of mosquitoes, exacerbating the dengue problem. It is crucial for authorities and communities to remain vigilant and take appropriate measures to prevent the spread of dengue, such as maintaining clean environments and eliminating stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.

Last year, Sri Lanka recorded over 76,000 dengue cases, according to official data. This underscores the persistent challenge posed by dengue and the importance of sustained efforts to combat the disease and protect public health.
