Kathmandu: Finance Minister Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat addressed the Asian Bankers Association (ABA) 39th Conference, encouraging Asian banks to consider investment opportunities in Nepal.

In his speech, Minister Mahat emphasized the vast potential for investment in Nepal and urged CEOs of Asian banks to explore opportunities in the country. He particularly highlighted the significant possibilities in the hydropower sector, given India's commitment to purchasing 10,000 megawatts of power from Nepal over the next decade.

The Finance Minister reassured the audience of the government's commitment to facilitating an investor-friendly environment, especially in the development of hydropower projects. He also mentioned the government's focus on promoting green energy, with the aim of achieving zero carbon emissions across all sectors of the economy by 2045.

Mahat noted the support from international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, in investing in large-scale hydropower projects in Nepal. He pledged the government's dedication to creating favorable conditions for foreign direct investment.

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari, also speaking at the conference, highlighted the stability of Nepal's economy despite challenges. He stressed the need for dynamic restructuring of the banking sector to contribute directly to economic growth.

Governor Adhikari expressed concerns about inflation rates exceeding central bank limits, attributing it to global geopolitical events. He acknowledged the necessity of adapting to rapid technological changes and emphasized the development of digital banking systems.

Addressing the role of Asian banks, ABA Chair Eugene S. Acevedo called for effective planning and collaboration to ensure the sustainability of the overall economies in Asian countries. The conference, attended by CEOs from over 60 banks and financial sectors representing 18 countries, is jointly organized by the Nepal Bankers' Association and the Asian Bankers Association.
