New Delhi: In a historic move, 78 federal lawmakers from various opposition political parties were suspended on Monday for the remainder of the ongoing winter session. The suspension, affecting 33 lawmakers from the lower house Lok Sabha and 45 from the upper house Rajya Sabha, marks the largest such action in India's parliamentary history.

This decision follows the suspension of 14 lawmakers last week—13 from Lok Sabha and one from Rajya Sabha—due to their "unruly conduct" during House proceedings. The previous suspension resulted from repeated disruptions as lawmakers raised concerns about a security breach inside the parliament on Dec. 13. During that incident, two individuals jumped into the Lok Sabha from the Visitors' Gallery, setting off smoke canisters while protesting against the federal government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the security breach as a "very serious" incident. The newly suspended opposition lawmakers were demanding the revocation of their colleagues' suspensions and a statement from Federal Home (Internal Security) Minister Amit Shah regarding last week's security breach.

Following the mass suspension, Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day.
