Gorkha: The Birendra Tal, a glacial lake nestled in Samagaun, Chumanubri rural municipality-1, northern Gorkha, has commenced its gradual return to normalcy after experiencing destabilization in the aftermath of a massive avalanche from Mt Manaslu.

Chief District Officer Bhola Dahal confirmed that the lake, which had overflowed due to the impact of the avalanche, is now gradually reverting to its previous state. Fortunately, the overflow did not result in any significant human or physical losses, as there are no settlements in close proximity to the lake.

Dahal further noted that the avalanche's impact on the lake has ceased, bringing relief to the region. The increased water flow from the overflow did, however, cause the destruction of a wooden bridge on the route from Samdo to Samagaun, approximately half an hour's trek from the lake.

Despite this isolated incident, there have been no other reported human or physical damages attributable to the lake's overflow. Security personnel have taken proactive measures by excavating a trench to facilitate water drainage from the lake, ensuring mitigation of potential risks from further disasters. Additionally, security forces remain on high alert to minimize any possible risks arising from the aftermath of the avalanche.

Following Sunday's avalanche incident, the District Administration Office promptly issued advisories urging residents living near the Budhigandaki River to exercise caution and refrain from approaching the riverbanks, given the increased water flow resulting from the avalanche. As the Birendra Tal gradually resumes its equilibrium, efforts continue to ensure the safety and well-being of the surrounding communities.
