Kathmandu: Nepal has strongly condemned recent attacks on United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers and urged the parties involved in the conflict to ensure the safety of peacekeepers. In a joint statement with 34 other UNIFIL-contributing countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that such actions must cease immediately and be thoroughly investigated.

The statement, made public through the Ministry's official platform X, reaffirmed the contributors' support for UNIFIL’s mission, aimed at stabilizing South Lebanon and promoting lasting peace in the Middle East in line with UN Security Council resolutions. The statement was co-signed by countries such as Armenia, Austria, Bangladesh, Fiji, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom.

The 34 nations condemned the attacks, stressing the importance of UNIFIL’s role, especially given the escalating tensions in the region. They called for the safety of peacekeepers to be guaranteed so they can continue their mediation and peace-support efforts.

Nepal's Ministry also reiterated its commitment to multilateral cooperation under the UN, emphasizing the need for adherence to international law and the UN Charter.

The Nepali Army (NA) has confirmed that all 877 of its personnel currently deployed in the UNIFIL mission are safe. NA spokesperson Gaurav Kumar KC reported that while sporadic incidents have disrupted daily operations, the NA remains in regular contact with its forces in Lebanon and will follow directives from the UN regarding the situation.
