Kathmandu: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak announced that the government is drafting a new bill aimed at replacing existing legal provisions to further strengthen the Nepal Police. Speaking at an event celebrating the 69th Police Day, Minister Lekhak expressed confidence that the new legislation would introduce measures to enhance the welfare, career development, and responsibilities of police personnel.

He acknowledged the dynamic role of the Nepal Police, emphasizing its significant contributions to protecting citizens' sovereign rights, maintaining national unity, and ensuring internal security. Minister Lekhak praised the police force for being at the forefront of disaster management and addressing various security challenges since its inception.

The Home Minister identified several modern security challenges, including international terrorism, cybercrime, cross-border crime, and money laundering. He noted that cybercrime, particularly the misuse of advanced technology, presents unique difficulties that require enhanced preparedness, appropriate policies, and the development of technological capabilities within the police force.

Minister Lekhak reiterated the Ministry of Home Affairs' commitment to providing the necessary support and coordination to strengthen the Nepal Police's ability to tackle these challenges. He also stressed the importance of effective strategies to address growing concerns such as suicide rates, road accidents, and drug abuse.

The draft bill, once enacted, is expected to modernize the Nepal Police and equip it to handle evolving security threats in the country.
