Paris: The European Union could soon impose another round of sanctions targeting Israeli settlers accused of inciting violence in Palestinian territories, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced at the Paris Peace Forum.

Barrot revealed that the EU sanctions regime has already been activated twice, with France spearheading measures against 28 "violent settlers." He suggested that a third round might be initiated "soon," reaffirming the bloc's stance against actions undermining international law and prospects for peace.

While emphasizing France’s commitment to Israel’s security, Barrot maintained that justice and adherence to international law were essential for lasting stability. During a recent visit to the West Bank, he reiterated France’s support for a two-state solution, stating that settlement activities threaten long-term peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.

The EU's foreign affairs commissioner, Josep Borrell, previously condemned settler violence, stating it endangers "any chance of peace" and called on the Israeli government to curb such actions. He also hinted at targeting enablers of violence, including individuals within the Israeli government.

France's stance aligns with measures taken by the United States, Canada, Britain, and Australia, which have already sanctioned extremist settlers. Over the past year, violence in the West Bank has intensified, with the Palestinian health ministry reporting more than 700 Palestinian deaths caused by Israeli troops and settlers.

Barrot’s statements and potential EU actions underline the international community’s growing concern over escalating tensions and their impact on a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
