Kathmandu: Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba has urged global leaders to address the severe impacts of climate change on Nepal, calling for justice and support for countries facing the crisis.
Speaking at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) during hearings on climate change obligations, Minister Deuba highlighted Nepal's unique vulnerability due to its mountainous geography and limited resources. She explained how Nepal’s glaciers and mountains play a vital role in balancing the global climate but are now at risk due to global warming.
“We are suffering from the effects of a crisis we did not create,” she said, emphasizing the need for financial and technical support from developed countries responsible for most emissions.
Nepal’s legal team, led by Udaya Raj Sapkota from the Ministry of Law, argued for the principle of shared but differentiated responsibilities. He stressed that wealthier nations must fulfill their commitments under international agreements like the Paris Accord by helping developing nations adapt to climate change.
Another representative, Suvanga Parajuli, called for accountability, explaining that countries causing environmental damage should compensate those affected. He said Nepal is not asking for charity but for fair treatment and justice.
This is Nepal’s first appearance at an ICJ hearing, showing its dedication to tackling climate challenges. The ongoing hearings in The Hague are aimed at clarifying the obligations of countries under international law regarding climate change.
