Geneva: The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has called for independent and transparent investigations into Israeli attacks on hospitals in Gaza, which have left the region’s healthcare system on the brink of collapse.
In a report released on Tuesday, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) outlined the catastrophic impact of these attacks on Palestinians’ access to health and medical care. The report highlighted that incidents documented between October 12, 2023, and June 30, 2024, caused widespread destruction of Gaza's healthcare infrastructure, leading to a significant loss of life among patients, medical staff, and civilians.
"The protection of hospitals during warfare is paramount and must be respected by all sides, at all times," Turk emphasized. He added that accountability for violations of international humanitarian and human rights law is essential, urging thorough investigations into the incidents.
Israel has claimed that Palestinian armed groups misused hospitals for military purposes, but the report described these accusations as "vague and broad," with insufficient evidence provided. In some cases, the allegations appeared to contradict publicly available information.
The ongoing destruction of Gaza’s healthcare facilities has exacerbated the region’s humanitarian crisis, further limiting access to vital medical services. Turk reiterated the importance of respecting the protection of hospitals and ensuring the safety of civilians and healthcare workers during times of conflict.
The report’s findings have raised serious concerns about Israel’s compliance with international law, calling for accountability to address the devastating consequences on the lives of the people in Gaza.
