Berlin: Britain, France, Germany, and Italy have expressed their support for an Arab-backed proposal to rebuild Gaza, calling it a "realistic path" toward improving conditions for Palestinians. The initiative, led by Muslim-majority nations, comes as an alternative to US President Donald Trump's plan, which has been widely criticized for seeking control over Gaza and displacing its residents.
Arab League’s Reconstruction Plan
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), representing 57 Muslim nations, formally adopted the Egyptian-crafted plan during an emergency meeting in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. This proposal envisions rebuilding Gaza under the administration of the Palestinian Authority (PA), while ensuring that the 2.4 million inhabitants remain in their homeland.
European Ministers Praise Arab Initiative
The foreign ministers of the four European countries praised the plan, stating that its implementation would lead to "swift and sustainable improvement" of the dire living conditions in Gaza. They also commended Arab states for presenting a joint recovery and reconstruction strategy and expressed their willingness to collaborate with all involved parties, including Palestinians and Israel.
Hamas Exclusion from the Plan
Unlike the Trump administration's approach, the Egyptian proposal excludes Hamas from governance in Gaza. Both the US and Israel have rejected the plan, arguing that it does not address security concerns. However, the European ministers emphasized that Hamas should neither govern Gaza nor pose a threat to Israel.
Call for Global Support
The OIC has urged the international community and financial institutions to provide immediate support for Gaza's reconstruction. While challenges remain, European leaders see this Arab-led initiative as a viable route toward stability in the war-torn region.
