Birgunj (Parsa): The Supreme Court has cleared the way for the long-stalled road expansion project in Birgunj by dismissing a series of writ petitions filed against the initiative. The case had remained under consideration for the past five years.

Five homeowners from Birgunj had filed separate petitions, opposing the proposed widening of the main road by 25 meters on both sides. Among the petitioners was Laxman Shah Rauniyar of Birgunj Municipal Corporation, who lodged his case in 2076 BS, naming the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers as the primary defendant. Other petitions were submitted on different dates, all challenging the expansion plans.

On Wednesday, a joint bench of Supreme Court Justices Binod Sharma and Mahesh Sharma Poudel dismissed all five writ petitions. The verdict has paved the way for the Division Road Office in Hetauda to proceed with the expansion of the main road section in Birgunj.

The project, which includes the expansion of roads from Gandak Chowk to Power House Chowk, Ghantaghar Chowk to Ardash Nagar, Rajat Jayanti Chowk, and Shankaracharya Gate to Miteri Bridge along the Tribhuvan Highway, had been on hold since the legal challenges were filed.

With the court’s decision, the stalled road widening work—aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion in Birgunj—is now expected to move forward.
