Kathmandu: Three writ petitions have been filed at the Supreme Court of Nepal questioning the qualifications of Attorney General Dr. Narayan Dutt Kandel.
According to Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Prasad Koirala, the petitions were filed on Wednesday and are scheduled for hearing on Thursday. The petitions have been lodged by advocates including Madhav Basnet and Deepak Raj Joshi, among others.
The petitioners argue that Dr. Kandel does not meet the constitutional qualifications required for the post of Attorney General. They claim that an unqualified individual has been appointed to such a significant constitutional position.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah had appointed Dr. Kandel as Attorney General on Chaitra 22. As per constitutional provisions, the Attorney General must be qualified to become a Supreme Court judge.
The writ petition states that Dr. Kandel does not fulfill the required criteria, particularly the condition of having at least 15 years of continuous experience as a legal practitioner. The court’s upcoming hearing is expected to determine the legality of his appointment.
