Dhaka: A Bangladeshi court has ordered the seizure of cricketer Shakib Al Hasan’s assets, adding to the legal troubles surrounding the sports star over his ties to the country’s former leader.
Shakib, a former lawmaker from the party of ousted ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has faced mounting legal challenges since her government was overthrown in a student-led uprising last year. Hasina fled to neighboring India by helicopter following the political turmoil.
The cricketer’s association with Hasina has made him a target of public scrutiny, and he is among dozens under investigation for a deadly police crackdown on protesters during the uprising. While he has not been charged in relation to those allegations, he is currently facing fraud charges for allegedly bouncing cheques worth over $300,000.
A magistrate in Dhaka issued the asset seizure order on Monday, following a previous arrest warrant issued in January.
Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh since Hasina’s government collapsed. At the time, he was playing in a domestic Twenty20 cricket league in Canada.
The 36-year-old left-arm allrounder is one of Bangladesh’s most accomplished cricketers, having played 71 Test matches, 247 One-Day Internationals, and 129 Twenty20 Internationals, with a combined total of 712 wickets.
